If you stay in a rental home, there may be many things about the interiors that you don’t like. The flooring can undoubtedly be one of them. As a tenant there’s very little you can do about it — or is there? There are many quick and inexpensive fixes that can cover up ugly floors. You can thank us later!

1. Area Rugs

The easiest way to hide a floor that’s an eyesore is to cover it with an area rug. Pick a rug that’s large enough to cover most of the floor, and also matches your décor and colour scheme.
You can even layer area rugs so that all the imperfections on the floor are cleverly hidden. A smaller rug goes on top and can have a pattern or colour that goes with the décor in the room. The base rug could be neutral in colour and texture. Set one rug diagonally on top of the other to add interest.

2. Floor Tile Decals

Floor tile decals come in easy-to-peel stick tiles. They are available in a wide range of patterns and colours. They are printed on vinyl and are hard wearing, durable and waterproof. Very quick to install, they are the perfect solution for renters. They will not damage the floor underneath and can easily be removed when you move out. What’s more, these decals stick on pretty much any surface. They can even be used on wall tiles and kitchen backsplashes.

3. Interlocking Carpet Tiles

Carpet tiles snap together and can be fitted on the top of your existing floor without glue. This option works best when fitted wall-to-wall, otherwise, the tiles will move around. The edges can be trimmed to fit the room. Carpet tiles are hard wearing and can be used in high movement areas inside your home.

4. Vinyl Flooring

A semi-permanent solution to not break the bank is to install vinyl flooring on top of the existing floor. If you are in a rental home, you can use an adhesive that can be removed at a later date. The vinyl tiles or sheets can be installed in just a few hours and can totally change the appearance of your room. If you need to remove the vinyl tiles later, do not grout them as that will permanently lock the tile to the floor.

5. Floor Stencils

If you’re a DIY enthusiast, you can hand-stencil each tile in your choice of patterns and colours. Paint the entire floor, or just the border and some areas like a carpet. For this, you will need a lot of patience, and you need to plan ahead to make sure that all the damaged tiles are covered. This is a permanent solution, so if you are renting you might want to check with your landlord first.

6. Hide Damaged Floors with Furniture

This is easily done when the damaged flooring is closer to the walls than to the centre of the room. If possible, cover up the imperfections with storage units, so that they just aren’t seen anymore. Console units, crockery cabinets, side tables can be added to cover up what’s underneath. You can even consider placing large potted plants in corners of the room, right on top of the damaged floor.

7. Just Redecorate!

If budget or permissions are not constraining factors, maybe it’s time for a change. There are many types of flooring that can just be laid on top of your existing floor. The quicker options are wooden laminate, hardwood tiles, linoleum, or vinyl. Vitrified tiles, granite or marble can be installed on top of an existing mosaic or tiled floor. However, it’s time-consuming and not easy to do when you are living in the house as things can get very messy. It’s always best to install a new floor when the house is completely empty.
