Practical Meets Elegant In This Chennai Home Done Right!

By - June 23, 2025

When Ravikumar and Lalitha imagined how their Chennai home would look, they knew one thing for certain—they wanted it to reflect their lifestyle: practical, grounded, and full of heart! This beautifully styled 3 BHK is designed on a modest budget of 15 lakhs and captures a chic urban vibe. Working with the young couple’s vision, the HomeLane team crafted a home that blends functionality with effortless style, resulting in interiors that are warm, modern, and quietly elegant.

We take you inside this thoughtfully designed home that’s all about cosy nooks and comfortable corners!

As you step into the home, you’re greeted by an air of quiet elegance that is carried through every room, featuring a subtle design narrative that’s infused with warmth. In the living room, a soft palette of beige, taupe and cream creates a low-key spatial backdrop.

A long, sleek entertainment unit takes centre stage, complete with floating drawers and a tall display unit crafted with meticulous attention to detail. Simple shelves hold a curated mix of books, trophies, and hand-picked accents, adding a heartwarming touch of personality. The back panel, in frosted ivory laminate and accented with delicate brass inlays, ties the look together.

Talking about their ideas for the design of this unit, Lalitha tells us, “We’ve collected quite a few showpieces and toys over the years, so we didn’t want just a basic TV unit! Most of the standard ones seemed too simple. We were clear from the start—we wanted something with a bit of luxury, something that could really showcase all our favourites and add a touch of elegance to the space.”

The entire unit—including the back panel, tall storage, and base cabinet—cost about INR 1.3 lakhs, excluding the fluted panel, which was sourced separately and not through HomeLane.

Centred around a calming palette of blues, the master bedroom strikes a lovely balance between everyday comfort and easy sophistication. The design speaks to a sense of refined style; one that’s grounded in thoughtful design.

Ravikumar explains the rationale behind the study and dresser unit in the master bedroom, “We designed this space to serve two purposes—one, of course, was dressing. And with the sliding design, it’s also perfect for keeping a laptop, which doesn’t need much depth anyway!”

The base unit doubles up as a dresser and work table, while there’s a tall unit with open cubbies to one side to store essentials in a neat, organised way. A fluted wood panel forms a backdrop to the large circular mirror, which visually opens up the room, making it feel larger and brighter. Books, a framed photo, and a small plant personalise the corner, adding a touch of warmth.

The standout feature of the room is the striking 9-foot-tall Armadio wardrobe that offers generous storage while making a bold style statement. Framed in champagne-toned aluminium, the sleek sliding shutters are finished in a high-gloss deep blue, accented with horizontal white lacquered glass inserts that break up the surface and add a crisp visual rhythm.

Ravikumar and Lalitha were very particular that they did not want to see any clothes hanging outside, and they also did not want the sections for used clothes and fresh clothes to be in the same space. As he put it, “One of the things we were very particular about when discussing our interiors was that we didn’t want clothes hanging behind doors or stuffed into the main wardrobe space. That often ends up being messy or smelly. The HomeLane team came up with a neat solution that we hadn’t seen before—and we loved it! They designed a separate section, neatly tucked away, where we can hang worn clothes. Once you close it, it’s out of sight—and that’s the beauty of it. It’s creative, and it works really well.”

Lalitha adds, “It’s completely closed off and multi-functional too. There’s space to hang clothes at the top, and two shelves below where we can store other items. That was one of our favourite parts of the design, especially since we were clear from the start that we didn’t want anything left out in the open.”

On the wall alongside, geometric panels of paint in shades of blue echo the palette, dialling up the depth and drama. The overall effect is clean, contemporary, and effortlessly chic, the perfect choice for a relaxed bedroom.

The overall budget for this section comes to around INR 90,000, excluding the fluted panel, which, again, is not done by HomeLane, but adds charm to the setup. The floor-to-ceiling Armadio unit, crafted for elegance and efficiency, comes in at approximately INR 2.3 lakhs overall.

Seamlessly merging ergonomic design with minimalist sensibilities, the design for the kids’ room champions shades of deep plum and soft ivory. Here, too, the study desk doubles up as a dresser and storage unit, with both closed cabinets and open shelves—perfect for keeping books, school supplies, and personal knick-knacks in order. Deep push-to-open drawers below provide ample storage for stationery and essentials.

Ravikumar explains, “When we were looking at the kids’ room, we felt it shouldn’t just have one plain colour. For kids, it needed something softer—like a flower, that kind of feeling. They’re young, so they need to dream. They need something that catches the eye. We were shown a lot of patterns, and we felt this one really worked well.

That was the whole idea—we wanted to make it more lively with minimal changes. Keep it simple, that was our basic requirement! And this is exactly what the designers gave us!”

Lalitha chips in, telling us, ”We also wanted to keep it light—not too dark—as it’s a kids’ room. The idea was to go with vibrant, light colours that make the space feel open and cheerful!”

The wardrobe maximises storage space in the room, with floor-to-ceiling storage in ivory and plum. A slim, full-height mirror panel is seamlessly integrated into one of the shutters, perfect for daily use without taking up additional space. Long, sleek black handles add a modern touch and make for easy access.

The interior spend for this space includes INR 50,000 for the study desk and around INR 2 lakhs for the wardrobe, including the mirror and wardrobe accessories.

The two-tone theme continues into the guest bedroom, where a taupe and ivory palette anchors the space. The study desk is designed with overhead glass-fronted cabinets and a tall unit alongside, with shutters that alternate colours for an interesting aesthetic.

Talking about the colour choices, Lalitha smiles, “Both of us decided on the colours and textures together. We were very careful while going through all the colours, and took a long time to decide! We even made a few last-minute changes. It has a very real, fabric-like feel when you look at it, which we love!”

This wardrobe in the guest bedroom mirrors the taupe and ivory palette from the study unit, creating a beautifully coordinated look. Here, too, a long mirror on one of the shutters doubles up as a dresser unit. The sleek 4 feet long vertical handles add a modern edge.

The budget for this room was thoughtfully planned, with the study desk coming in at INR 40,000 and the wardrobe, complete with mirror and accessories, bringing the total to around INR 2 lakhs.

Intentional design sets the stage for this practical and warm U-shaped modular kitchen, crafted with painstaking attention to the smallest detail. The soft beige and blush cabinetry reflects natural light beautifully, creating an airy and inviting feel. Upper cabinets with a glossy finish add a modern edge, while the dark countertop provides a balanced contrast.

On either side of the hob and chimney, glass cabinets hold space for daily-use spices and kitchen essentials.

Lalitha was very particular about the kitchen layout and organisation. As she puts it, “The one thing we were sure about was that the duct shouldn’t be visible—the chimney pipe had to be completely concealed. We had quite a few discussions with our designer on how best to do that and make sure it met our expectations. And honestly, we absolutely loved how the kitchen turned out!

A tambour unit with a sleek aluminium rolling shutter to one side keeps appliances and kitchen tools out of sight. Thoughtful additions like under-cabinet lighting and smart storage ensure that the kitchen is as practical as it is stylish.

The overall budget for this space came to around INR 2.4 lakhs—excellent value for money indeed, for a kitchen that’s as elegant as it is efficient!

Just outside the kitchen, this cleverly designed unit integrates the pooja space with a sleek crockery cabinet. A mix of drawers and swing doors in the base unit provides practical storage, with removable internal shelves and subtle knobs adding a clean finish. Above, the wall unit showcases aluminium profile doors with clear glass shutters and glass shelves, all softly illuminated from within and below.

The tall cabinet continues this theme, offering more display space with removable glass shelves and integrated lighting.

The beautifully designed CNC-cut shutter for the pooja is fitted with tiny brass bells; and the gorgeous brass handles with a peacock motif add a traditional touch.

“The builder hasn’t provided any pooja room for this house” Lalitha tells us, adding, “Having a separate pooja room was one of our main requirements when we spoke with the interior designers. We were very specific about wanting it designed like a proper traditional room—where you open the door, step inside, sit comfortably, and perform your prayers in the traditional way. This was something we specifically requested, and they completely customised it according to our needs.”

Inside the pooja, a CNC back panel with soft backlighting creates a serene setting, while built-in drawers offer discreet storage.

The total investment for this dual-purpose unit is approximately INR 2.8 lakhs— INR 1.7 lakhs for the crockery section, including the tall cabinet, and INR 1.1 lakhs for the fully customised puja unit.

All in all, the interiors for this lovely home came together within a well-balanced budget of INR 15 lakhs.
