A Rainbow of Pastels Invigorates this Delightful Mumbai Abode!

When actor and influencer Karishma Sharma wanted the interior of her 2 BHK in Andheri West done up, she had very exacting requirements. She wanted a fresh and light design, with smart space interventions and a subtle palette that would open up the spaces, keeping the compact apartment from feeling cramped. She showed HomeLane designer Divya examples of the home decor style that she had in mind – even down to the kind of walls she wanted! And luckily enough, Divya was able to echo her vision and faithfully replicate it in her home.

Thinking outside the box, the designer was able to craft delightfully charming interiors for the young homeowner. The flow of pastel colours from one space to the next is effortless, with curvilinear shapes and metallic accents underlining the design vocabulary that runs through the home. There’s a lively play on patterns too; the overall composition speaking to youthful, girlish sensibilities without being overly saccharine.

Right from the moment you step into this pretty abode, the soothing ambience created by the use of relaxing pastels and serene neutrals washes over you. Sky blue walls with Plaster-of-Paris wainscoting add old-school character and charm, lending a fresh and modern outlook to the décor. An arched door embellished with glass panels is painted in bright blue, pairing beautifully with the accent walls.

One wall of the living room is taken up by the sleek, contemporary TV unit in white. Done up in minimal, yet warm, Scandi style, the wall-mounted entertainment unit features an easy mix of open storage and drawers against a simple backdrop of a white backlit panel.

The arched door to one side of the living room originally led to the dining room, which Karishma did not find useful. She asked Divya to see how this space could be converted into a walk-in-wardrobe to house her extensive collection of clothes, shoes and accessories. 

“This part was very difficult to imagine,” she says, speaking about how HomeLane was able to match her brief. “I told them what I want – but I was just not able to visualise how they were going to build a whole new wall around it, how they were going to do the shelves and so on!” And she was delighted with the outcome. With a central island and storage shelves all around, the dressing space has plenty of storage for her wardrobe essentials, and then some more!

Shades of pale green, peach and pink sit happily together in this extra special bedroom that’s everything that Karishma could have ever wanted! The tufted headboard in conch shell pink adds a touch of childish magic, dialling up the style quotient a notch or two. 

“I’m so glad I chose pink – pink makes me happy!” laughs Karishma, adding, “I told my friends that I was going to have a pink bed, and they thought it would be really funny – and I’d be like a Barbie doll coming out of a set!” Her mother told her to go with her heart, and she’s glad that she did.

“I really wanted the two lights on either side of my bed. This was a last-minute thing, and it hit me much after the design was finalised that this is the aesthetic I was looking for.” HomeLane designer Divya made sure that it was done, going the extra mile to redo the lighting plan in the room so that Karishma’s whims could be accommodated.

Karishma wanted her bedroom to be a peaceful sanctuary where she could relax after a gruelling workday. In her words, “Being an actor, there’s always that pressure – you have to pay your rent and survive the times when you don’t have a job and it really gets to you! Your home is the only place where you can just feel safe, which is a very big thing in Bombay. “ 

And true to her ask, her bedroom reflects just what she needed. Wonderfully crafted in shades that run the gamut of pink, peach and brown, this pretty room is a symphony in pastels. Floor-to-ceiling silken drapes at the windows accentuate the space, adding layers of texture and visual depth.

The stylish dressing table is set against a backdrop of silken peach wallpaper, with gold embellishments adding a luxe element that instantly elevates the space. From the leafy gold chair to the gold-framed mirror and oversized brass vase with (you guessed it!) pink flowers, this dressing space is thoughtfully designed to hold Karishma’s array of makeup items right where she needs them. To one side, a wall unit for books is a useful addition to the room.

A medley of carelessly put-together photographs and posters against a green accent wall showcases Karishma’s career highlights. Interspersed with candid pictures of family and friends, this gallery wall spontaneously narrates the story of Karishma’s journey.

When she’s not out shooting round the clock, Karishma loves to potter around in the powder blue and vanilla white kitchen. Compact and yet highly functional, this tiny kitchen has everything she needs to whip up a quick and healthy meal. Glass cabinets in the upper run make her kitchen feel light and bright, and the softness of the tones falls in line with the overall muted palette.

Karishma sums up her experience with getting her home designed by the HomeLane team, enthusing, “I think it was very reasonably priced, you can get a lovely house within a very reasonable budget.”
