You wake up one fine morning and realise that this is not the way you want to live. Your bedroom is so cluttered that you canāt think straight. Your wardrobe shutters donāt close and the drawers donāt shut as they are with all your clothes ā not to mention the chair in the corner piled high with outfits that you have tried on before deciding against it. Itās clearly time to rethink your bedroom design.
Itās time to de-clutter, and weāre here to share our magic formula to a clutter-free bedroom! Hereās how you can make it happen.
1. Set the Intent, and Believe You Can Do It
This should be the first step for anything that you want to do, really, and de-cluttering is no exception. Look around your bedroom. Imagine it without all the mess, and tell yourself that you are going to achieve your aim. Your bedroom should be a peaceful place where you can get a good nightās sleep, and should not be a centre of chaos. When your room is in a mess, your mind tends to get stressed too. You deserve a clean, organised room, and you can make it happen!
2. Make Your Bed
Strip all the sheets and pillowcases and put them in the washer. Vacuum the mattress if it is dusty. Get fresh sheets and pillowcases that match. Make your bed hotel style, tucking in the ends of the sheets neatly. Discard any blankets or throws that you donāt use or need.

3. Start with Flat Surfaces
Start small, so that you feel motivated to continue. Clear out any unwanted items from the top of your dresser, bedside tables and desk. If you have open shelves, reorganise them. Throw away any garbage and put back things where they belong. When the surfaces are all empty, wipe them down with spray and a duster cloth.
4. Give Away Any DĆ©cor Items That You Donāt Need
If you need more space in your room, look around and see if there is any piece of furniture that is not useful but is taking up space. You may not really need an armchair, and the pictures on the walls may be outdated. The old, broken lamp in the corner can go. The coffee mug without a handle, as well. If you no longer play badminton, consider giving away the rackets that are hanging on the wall. Give away any unwanted items that are on the shelves if you are no longer attached to them.
5. Organize Drawers and Wardrobes
This is what is going to take up a lot of time, so take a deep breath before you start! Take out everything thatās in your wardrobe and lay it out on your bed. Hereās how you can sort through the contents:
- Clothes that no longer fit can go in a pile for donation
- Clothes that are out of fashion and havenāt been worn in over a year can also be given away
- If thereās anything that doesnāt belong in your bedroom, place it in a box and take it where it should be
- Books and papers that you no longer need can be donated or recycled.
- If thereās anything that is broken, torn and can no longer be used, keep it aside to be thrown away.
- Do the same with shoes, jewellery, handbags, belts and other accessories in your closet.
Once you are done, wipe down the surfaces of your wardrobe and then put back only the items that you really need, love and will definitely use. Organise them in a way that will be easy to use. For instance, your T-shirts, vests and socks can be rolled up and placed vertically inside baskets so that they are easy to find.
You can even consider arranging things by colour if it will help you to keep track of your clothes more easily. Get hangers for all the clothes that should not be folded.
6. Deep Clean Your Room
Once you are done with the wardrobe and drawers, remove all the items that you want to donate, throw or relocate to another room. Youāre left with just what you need, beautifully arranged and organised to your satisfaction. All thatās left is a great deep cleaning! Your bed is already made, so now you can take care of the rest of the room.
- Dust and clean all surfaces
- Remove the curtains and wash or dry-clean them
- Wash the window glass
- Clean the mirror
- Wipe down the fan and light fittings
- Vacuum and mop the floor
- Vacuum the rugs
Youāre done! Are you happy with the results? Itās important that you change your habits to keep your room looking neat all the time. Some tips:
- Make your bed as soon as you get up in the morning
- If you donāt have one already, buy a laundry hamper and make sure that you put dirty clothes in it
- Put away small items like jewellery or accessories after you are done
- Never let anything pile up
- Change the sheets regularly
