What does ergonomics have to do with bathroom design? A lot! We spend a lot of time in our bathrooms – some more than others – and yet we tend to not really consider ergonomics when it comes to the design of our bathrooms. Form and function come together to create a great ergonomic design. It is a key factor in the decor and design of homes, allowing you to use the space efficiency and productivity. A space that is designed keeping the ergonomics in mind will reduce discomfort over prolonged use.
Well if you are about to design or redesign your bathroom, read on because we have some super useful tips to help you ergonomically design your bathroom space.
Taps and shower fittings are often placed in pre-defined spaces in most traditional bathrooms. This could go against ergonomic design. Have you turned on the faucet expecting the tap to turn on but accidentally turns on the overhead shower head instead? The design flaw is that those usual shower taps are placed directly below showerheads. Placing them on perpendicular walls could be a better design.
Washbasins, mirrors, and sink cabinets are often chosen based on their length and depth, not height. There isn’t one standard height for such accessories. The placement depends on the average height of people in the home. The problem with accessories is that raising mirrors and cabinets automatically affects the position of the sink. Ensuring that such accessories are of the most convenient height makes it easier for elders and children.
Space between the tap and the sink is very important because if it’s inadequate, you may hurt your forehead when you bend down to wash your face. Avoid choosing a long tap for a small sink or a short tap for a large basin. There should be at least a head’s length between the tap spout and the sink’s rim. This also avoids splashbacks.
When it comes to drawers vs. cupboards, the same principle applies in the bathroom as well kitchen. Drawers offer more storage, are easier to use, and are more functional than cupboards. Cupboards make it harder to reach things in the back. Drawers make rummaging easier, especially for elders. You could even customise your drawers with inbuilt lights so that finding things are even easier.
Bathrooms are often hotspots for accidents because of their slippery surfaces. To avoid getting the whole bathroom wet, ensure that towel racks and soap trays are as close to the shower area as possible. Smaller hand towels and other accessories can be positioned on the other side.
Ergonomics isn’t only about the design, but maintenance as well. Purchasing and positioning accessories and materials that are easy to clean is an essential part of maintaining your bathroom.
Seating in the bathroom is not a necessity but it sure does make it a more relaxing space where you can spend more alone time soaking your feet and listening to music. You could create a spa-like feeling by displaying plants or candles on the seat. If an elaborate seating platform is not for you, choose a simple stool and you could make a significant difference in your bathroom.
