If you’re planning your kitchen layout in a U or L shape, you’re bound to run into issues with the corner cabinets. How can you optimise the space in the corner, and make the most creative use of the blind space where the two counters meet? It’s not easy to lean down or reach right in to access the far corner, which means that anything stored there tends to get stuck and forgotten. But by using smart corner units, it’s possible to efficiently use the corners to maximise storage.

There are many configurations available in a wide variety of finishes, from swing-out shelves to drawers that pull right out. Here’s how you can use those corners in creative ways!

When the Corner Is Accessible from One Side Only

Option 1: S-Shaped Corner Accessory

When one side of the corner is fitted with drawers, as is the case in this kitchen, the far end becomes almost impossible to access from the open side. This S-shaped corner accessory utilizes all the space available and swings out so that you don’t have to bend too much. If you are getting your kitchen interiors done from HomeLane, you could opt for the below accessories:

  1. Hettich Cargoman – Rs. 26,760/-
  2. Spitze lemans corner (SS basket with a white solid base) – Rs. 22,593/-

Option 2: Magic Corner

Here’s a “Magic Corner” solution that is customised to hold a trash bin. Magic corner solutions are also available without the bin and with plain shelves on two levels for storage. This works as a two-step system, where the outer unit is attached to the shutter, and the inner unit slides out when the doors are opened. HomeLane offers magic corners at very competitive rates:

  1. Hettich magic corner – Rs. 38,645/-
  2. Spitze magic corner (SS basket with a white solid base) – Rs. 24,630/-

When the Corner Is Accessible from Both Sides

Option 1: Carousal Units

Carousel units that rotate on a central pivot work very well for corner spaces. They can be used to store heavy-duty pots and pans. They can also be accessed very easily. These carousel trays are commonly available as three-quarters of a circle or as a half-circle, and take up one foot of space on each side. Full circle units are less commonly available, but if you are opting for this, the countertop also has to be angled in the corner which is sometimes inconvenient. HomeLane offers the following carousel unit options:

  1. Hettich C-3/4 carousel (SS basket with white solid base – melamine coated white with non-slip special coating) – Rs. 24,794/-
  2. Spitze corner carousel (SS basket with white solid base) – Rs. 21,509/-
  3. Everyday corner carousel (700mm dia) (in stainless steel) – Rs. 7,974/-

Option 2: Chrome Plate Steel Carousel Corner units

The three quarter or 270-degree carousel units are available in chrome-plated steel, or with a solid plate on the bottom as shown in this image. One disadvantage of the chrome-plated steel wire rack version is that if any small item slips through to the bottom, it can be difficult to access from below. A word of caution, these units should be fitted by experienced carpenters because if the work is not done well, the units could become wobbly all too soon.

Option 3: L-Shaped Shelves

Fixed corner L-shaped shelves provide the maximum stacking space for storage. However, it’s hard to reach into the far corner; so this option should only be used to store heavy items that are not frequently used in the kitchen. Note that ideally, you will have to provide double-hinged shutters that open out to one side.

Option 4: 45-Degree Kitchen Corners

By creating a 45-degree angle and placing the sink in the corner, it’s possible to utilise the space below the corner fully. The area in the far end gets efficiently used for the plumbing below the sink.

Option 5: V-Shaped Corner Drawers

V-shaped corner drawers that slide out fully are a great solution for your awkward corners. However, be mindful of what you will store in the angles of the drawer; only smaller items like cutlery may be possible. These drawers could also increase the cost of your modular kitchen, as there will be quite a bit of wastage of material.

Designing the Corner Cabinets Above the Counter

While there are many storage solutions and accessories available for the corner spaces below the counter, many kitchens will also face the same problem above the counter. A lot of designers cope with this issue by simply running the cabinets along one wall only, in which case the corner dilemma does not arise at all. In any case, the depth of the cabinets above the counter is usually only one foot, which means that the far corner is not as difficult to access as it is below the counter. Here are some innovative solutions for the corners above the counter:

Option 1: L-Shaped Corners

Open L-shaped shelves in the corner are both aesthetic and functional, solving the corner access problem very easily. You can use these shelves to display your collection of fine pottery or store spices in pretty jars for easy access while cooking.

Option 2: Open Shelves

In this kitchen, too, the corner shelf above the counter has been left open for easy access. The designer has balanced it with another open shelf to one side. If you would rather have the corner unit closed, double-hinged shutters would be your ideal choice.

Regardless of the design you choose, make sure that you buy only the best quality kitchen accessories. Also do get the fitting done by an experienced team of HomeLane!
