Your bedroom is your own personal sanctuary; it’s possibly the one place in the whole world where you can let your hair down and just be yourself. After a tiring day outdoors, there’s nothing that feels as good as being able to relax, unwind and de-stress in your bedroom! The layout and design of your bedroom plays an important role in the quality of this space and the ambience created.

There are a few very important elements that you should keep in mind when planning your bedroom layout. The ergonomics of the room—that is, the way in which you arrange the furniture and accessories in the room to optimise their usage—plays a key role in the functionality of the spaces. A bedroom that is well designed and is ergonomic will have an easy flow of spaces, an optimally arranged layout, and ideal dimensions and heights of various elements to suit your needs.

Ergonomically designed spaces are efficient, safe and comfortable to use, and home designers must always consider the principles of this science when designing functional spaces. To help you understand what it’s all about, we’ve put together a beginner’s guide to the ergonomics of your bedroom.

Identify Your Requirements

How many people will be using your bedroom? Will it double up as a home office during the day? Map out your storage requirements and furniture needs. Will a Queen-sized bed do, or do you need a larger one? You might want to have a small dressing table as well, and a work desk with storage for your home office needs. An accent chair that can be used to watch TV or for reading is also lovely to have, if space permits.

Measure the Room

It’s very important to know exactly how much space you have to work with. Using a measuring tape, find to the nearest inch the width and length of the room. Don’t forget to measure the positions of doors and windows and the locations of electrical points.

Understand the Sizes of Furniture in the Room

To be able to create a layout plan, you will need to know the sizes of the furniture you are planning to use. Here are a few important dimensions to help you with your planning:

  • A Queen size bed is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long, while a King size bed is 76 inches wide and 80 inches long. A single bed is approximately 36 inches wide and 72 inches in length, but these dimensions can vary a bit.
  • Including the height of the mattress, the top of your bed should be between 18 to 24 inches. If you can sit comfortably on the edge of the bed with your feet planted on the floor and your knees at 90 degrees to the ground, then you will find it easy to use.
  • The depth of your wardrobe is usually 24 inches or 2 feet, including the box and the shutters. Each module of storage will be around 18 to 24 inches wide. If you’re using hinged shutters, a door over 24 inches wide will be difficult to use and could look bulky. And if you are opting for sliding doors, the ideal width of each door can be between 3 to 4 feet so that the sliding channels are not stressed too much and can function efficiently.

  • Allow 3 feet clear space on 3 sides of the bed as walkways for easy circulation. If your bedroom is compact, try to leave at least 2 feet on the side that is less frequently used, as you will need this much space to make the bed.https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/white-pillows-on-wooden-bed-minimal-1126541804
  • If your wardrobe is a hinged one, allow for enough space to easily walk past the shutters when they are in open position. This means that you should leave at least 3.5 or 4 feet in front of a wardrobe which has a 2 feet wide shutter. If you are opting for sliding wardrobes, you do not require additional space for the swing of the doors.

  • Bedside tables will usually have a depth of 12 to 18 inches, and a width of around 2 feet (which can be customised to the space available). The height should be one or two inches below the top height of the mattress.
  • A work desk can be 2 feet in depth and a minimum of 4 feet wide. The height of the top of the desk is ideally 30 inches from the ground. There should be at least 4 feet between the back of the chair in open position, and any other fixed furniture in the room.

Create a Basic Plan

Once you are armed with the dimensions of various pieces of furniture in the room, you can sketch out a neat and well organised layout plan. First figure out where the larger pieces like the bed and the wardrobes will go, and then add other items like bedside tables, desks, accent chairs and a chest of drawers or a dresser.

Pay attention to the positions of doors, windows and electrical points in the room. You don’t want to be covering up the window with a tall wardrobe—but a desk in front of the window is always a good idea.

For the most efficient use of available space, you can choose to combine the wardrobe and the desk along one wall. You can also have the dressing unit within your wardrobe if there is not enough space to have a separate dresser, as this clever designer has done.

Television in the Bedroom

Are you someone who loves to fall asleep while binge-watching the latest Netflix serials? Then a television in your bedroom is a must. (However, experts claim that sleeping with the TV on exposes you to blue light that is known to cause health issues. Which means that if you can do without a TV in the bedroom, you’ll get a more restful sleep and stay healthier!)

A wall-mounted flat screen TV should be positioned at such a height that the middle of the screen is at your eye level when you are in bed. The ideal TV viewing distance is based on the size of your TV screen. Read this blog to know more about TV units for your bedroom.

Maximise Storage

There’s no such thing as too much storage in a room! Maximise the storage space by installing a loft above the wardrobe, where you can stow away items that are not often accessed; such as travel suitcases and quilts for use in winter.

You can also opt for a bed with storage in the headboard, and lift-ups or pull-out drawers below the platform, where you can store seasonal clothes, bed linen and extra pillows.

If there is space next to the window, you can even create a lovely window seat with hidden storage underneath. By adding floor-to-ceiling cabinets on either side of the window, as shown here, you can get the required depth for the seat.

As you can see, there are quite a few factors to keep in mind when you design the ideal bedroom layout. Finding yourself getting confused or overwhelmed? The HomeLane team can guide you from start to finish, helping you create the perfect bedroom of your dreams!
