It’s no surprise that small kitchens usually have space constraints – you may feel that the workspace and available storage is always an issue. You are not alone! A lot of homeowners feel frustrated when their countertops are overcrowded and they just can’t find the space to store that beloved wedding china that is still in its package.

However, if you are innovative with the space available, you don’t have to compromise what your little kitchen can include. We have rounded up some clever storage ideas for small kitchens that our design experts love to get your creative juices flowing:

1. Pots and Pan Area

Pots and pans are large, heavy and difficult to store in a small kitchen. Fixing a pegboard discreetly behind the door or on walls to hang this and other essential utensils like serving spoons, graters and strainers can be a wonderful alternative. Even if the kitchen area is small, you might be able to fix compact floating shelves to store spices and groceries. If you plan this well, the area can be made to look quirky and attractive.

2. Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchen cabinets, especially bottom cabinets, can pack in a lot of items. Use stackable baskets or collapsible shelves to make maximum use of this space. You can also buy undershelf hanging wire baskets to organize and store smaller items. These are easy to install and you don’t need any tools. You could also get smaller drawers installed inside bigger ones like in the image to make maximum use of the vertical space above your big containers.

3. Above Cabinets

For items that you don’t need access to every day, the space above the top cabinets is ideal. Additional bottles, extra groceries, large packets of grains, cookbooks, large cookware and other items that you don’t need to reach for every day can be stored up there in neat baskets.

4. Kitchen Tissue, Cling Wrap, and Silver Foil Storage

Cling wraps, silver foils, and other wrapping material, as well as kitchen towels, are always required around the kitchen. Installing these dispensers on your kitchen wall or on the insides of cabinet doors makes them easy to find and use.

5. Storage Ideas for Under The Sink

The space under sinks is usually underused and ignored. It tends to be a dump yard for cleaning equipment, detergents, and the like. This can cause spills. One way to organize this area is to hang everything on tension rods to keep them in order. Take advantage of the vertical space by installing bins along the sides. You could also get yourself some see-through bins to keep smaller items like extra kitchen sponges so that you don’t have to rummage every time.

6. Space for Trash

There should be a dedicated space for the trash in the kitchen. Ideally, one drawer should be divided into wet and dry waste so that waste segregation is easy.

Trash bags are another item that you need daily. Placing them in rollers/dispensers that are mounted to the door of the cabinet (or the wall under the sink) will ensure you are using the space for something really useful. You will also be able to find and access the bags easily.

7. Buy a Space-saving Dish Drainer

Plates and cutlery left out to dry can occupy a lot of space on kitchen counters. Installing a wall-mounted dish drainer can help save some counter space. If you live in a rented home and cant install it on the wall, make sure you purchase a tall dish drainer with at least two levels so that you make maximum use of the occupied counter space.

8. Small Kitchen Tables

Most small kitchens won’t have space for an island. But placing a small table instead of an island can be very useful; it gives extra counter space for meal prep and a place where the family can gather for a quick meal. If your table design allows for it, you could also get some additional under-table space for storage. Make sure that you pick a light table that can be moved around so that you can carry it into another room in case you need it.

9. Organizing Kitchen Plates and Trays

Instead of stacking plates, trays, and baking sheets horizontally, stack them vertically by separating them with pantry dividers. It will create more space on the shelf. You could even make your own dividers with metal rods or wooden planks.

10. Magnetic Strips in Small Kitchens

For kitchens with a lack of drawers, a magnetic strip can be used to hang knives, ladles, and more from walls. Magnetics strips can also be used to stick spices on the fridge.
